Volvo’s S40 2.4i luxury sedan is equipped with a powerful 2.4 liter engine. It has 5 cylinders in an inline configuration. The engine has a compression ratio of 10.3 to 1, an 83 mm bore and a 90 mm stroke. The engine has a dual overhead cam (DOHC) and uses variable valve timing and camshaft to deliver maximum performance from all of its 24 valves. The R Design and the all wheel drive R Design S40 both come with a slightly larger (2.5 liter, 153.8 cubic inch) 5 cylinder inline engine that powers it in both the two wheel drive and all wheel drive models. This engine serves up 227 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 236 foot pounds of torque at a range of 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm.
The T5 R design two wheel drive model gets 21 mpg in urban environments and 30 mpg on the highway with the Geartronic transmission only. The four wheel drive model comes with a 6 speed manual transmission that gives it 20 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway. Equipped with the Geartronic transmission, the vehicle is rated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.
